Life story

Life story

Major Henry Petrie Graveson was awarded the O.B.E. on 3rd June, 1919 for his valuable service in India in connection with the war. He was in the Supply and Transport Corps of the Indian Army. Biography Henry was born in Beetham, Kendal, Westmorland on 2nd April, 1862 to John Graveson, a gardener,  and his wife Eleanor Herbert, a shirt maker. In his youth, Henry was a shopman and on joining the Indian Army, he served in the Supply and Transport Corps in Bombay. Henry married Kate Rodgers in Bengal on 6th August 1890. A daughter, Eleanor Dorothy Ida Graveson, was born on 14th February 1903. She was baptised in Mhow on 21st March. Sadly she died on 24th September 1906 on board the troopship SS Assaye and was buried at sea off Bombay. When Henry retired from the Army in 1920, he and Kate returned to England, living in Henry's home town of Beetham near Kendal. By the 1930's, they had moved to Worthing, living at 112 Heene Road. Henry died here on 20th March 1932. Probate was granted on 6th May to Kate Graveson widow. Effects £2010 9s 4d.
