Life story

Henry William Card was born in 1865 in Speldhurst in Kent. (Speldhurst is just outside Tunbridge Wells.) His father, William, was from Sussex, and was an Under Gardener in 1871. The family was in Ashurst, just west of Speldhurst, by 1871. William, and wife Jane (nee Aris), born Speldhurst, had, by then, 3 sons, Henry being the eldest. 23-year-old James Aris, brother and unmarried, was part of the family. He was a Domestic Gardener, and is recorded as deaf. By 1881, still in Ashurst, there were 6 chidren, as well as James. Henry, at 15, was a Postman, brother Frederick was a Pageboy, and the younger ones Scholars. In 1891, Henry, now a Porter, was one of 10 Servants in a Lodging House at 73 London Road, Tunbridge

In 1895, in Tunbridge Wells, he married Ellen Harriet King.

Ellen was born in Tunbridge. Her parents were Henry and Harriet King. At Goods Station Place, Tunbridge, in 1871, and in 1881 the family were Lodgers in the house of Joseph Glover, a Labourer. Henry, a Bricklayer, was from Frant,(in East Sussex, but just outside Tunbridge Wells). Harriet, was from Tunbridge Wells. Ellen was the second of 5 children, all born in Tunbridge.

Ellen and Henry had moved to Eastbourne by 1901 he was a Club Steward, and the couple were Boarders with Harriet Rolfe, a Beer Retailer.

By 1911 the family was living at 6 Reigate Road. (The property belonged to Mrs Wallace, of 5 Reigate Road.) Harry was a Jobbing Gardener. The couple had been married for 15 years, with 2 children, 1 living. (Daughter Dorothy was born, and died, in 1904) Their daughter Gladys Edith was 4, and born in Eastbourne (Son Leonard Stanley, was born in 1911, in Tunbridge Wells, and lived and died there in 1931.)

During WW1 Harry enlisted in 1915 as a Private in the 10th Essex Regiment No. 15285,and served in France. He was also in the Royal Flying Corps, and the Kings Own Scottish Borderers.

He was living at Glenside, Reigate Rd, when he died on 25th Aug 1922 at the General Hospital, Tunbridge Wells. He gave Probate to Ellen Harriet.

Ellen was living at 8 Reigate Rd when she died.
