The family was in Ashurst, just west of Speldhurst, by 1871. William, and wife Jane (nee Aris), born Speldhurst, had, by then, 3 sons, Henry being the eldest. 23-year-old James Aris, brother and unmarried, was part of the family. He was a Domestic Gardener, and is recorded as deaf.
By 1881, still in Ashurst, there were 6 chidren, as well as James. Henry, at 15, was a Postman, brother Frederick was a Pageboy, and the younger ones Scholars.
In 1891, Henry, now a Porter, was one of 10 Servants in a Lodging House at 73 London Road, Tunbridge
Ellen and Henry had moved to Eastbourne by 1901 he was a Club Steward, and the couple were Boarders with Harriet Rolfe, a Beer Retailer.
By 1911 the family was living at 6 Reigate Road. (The property belonged to Mrs Wallace, of 5 Reigate Road.)
Harry was a Jobbing Gardener.
The couple had been married for 15 years, with 2 children, 1 living. (Daughter Dorothy was born, and died, in 1904)
Their daughter Gladys Edith was 4, and born in Eastbourne
(Son Leonard Stanley, was born in 1911, in Tunbridge Wells, and lived and died there in 1931.)
