Life story

Henry was a bill broker, which meant that he was a money dealer who bought, sold and negotiated the discounting of bills of exchange or promissory notes. His father Philip Blunt Burgess, was a Clerk in Holy Orders, and his mother was Eliza Haviland Burgess nee Kaye. He was born on 3 January 1853 but was not baptised until 31 January 1855. He married Mary Agnes Hill in 1880 at Braintree, Essex. They had eight children, three of whom had died by 1911. He lived in Hove for at least 20 years but at the time of his death on 7 October 1918 his home was at Byron Hall in Worthing.

FUNERAL OF MR BURGESS. - The funeral of the late Mr. Henry William Burgess, of Byron Hall Byron-road, and formerly of Palmeira-square, Hove, who passed away last week, at the age of sixty five, took place at Heene on Friday. The officiating Clergy were the Rev. Canon Flynn (of St John’s Church, Hove) and the Rev. J.P. Fallowes (Rector of Heene) and the internment was at Heene Cemetery. A number of friends of the family were present. The chief mourners were the elder son, Mr. Harold Burgess, and the daughters of the deceased, Mrs. Brown and the Misses Sylvia and Angela Burgess. His younger son, Captain Cyril Burgess, was unable to be present, as he is now with the North Russian Expeditionary Force. A beautiful white cross extending the entire length of the coffin, was sent by the widow, and among the other contributors of floral tributes were Mrs. Brown (his daughter), Harold, Sylvia, Cyril and Angela (his sons and daughters), Mr. and Mrs. Emmett, Mr. F.W. Hull, Captain A.R.S.
