Life story

Life story

Henry Charles Bull was born in 1833 in Westminster, London. He was the son of John Bull, gentleman, and Elizabeth, 32yrs. Henry had 4 older siblings, James b.1824, Louisa b.1826, Ellen b.1826, and Eliza b.1828.

Henry entered Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1854, studying for the priesthood, he gained his B.A. in 1859 and M.A. in 1862. He was curate in Golborne, Lancashire, from 1858-1860, where he married Elizabeth Quirk, 19yrs, on 6th July 1859 at the Parish Church, Golborne. She was the daughter of Rev. Charles Thomas Quirk, of Royton. They moved to Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, where Henry was a curate from 1860-1864 and their first son, Henry, was born in 1860.

Henry became Vicar of St. James, Wigan, in 1864 where he remained until his retirement in 1901. In 1895 he was appointed Rural Dean of Wigan. Henry and Elizabeth had 10 children, 7 boys and 3 girls.

Henry and Elizabeth retired to Worthing shortly after 1901, living at 'Gable End', Heene, where Henry died, on 15th December 1905, aged 72yrs. Probate was granted to Arthur Louis Alfred Hertslet, stockbroker, and Charles Harold Eckersley Bull, Esquire, effects £13631 7s 4d. Value 2022 - £1.7m.
