Life story

Life story

Helena Moss was born on 1st March 1860 in Kilburn, Marylebone, London, she was baptised at St. Mark's, on 14th December 1861. She was the daughter of George Moss, 48yrs, Merchant, and Susannah, 40yrs, nee Rofe. She was named after the island of St. Helena, where her mother was born and her father had been the French Vice-Consul in the Capital, Jamestown. Helena had 6 siblings, several of whom had been born in St. Helena: Katherine b.1845, Elizabeth and George b.1849, Louisa b.1851, Phoebe b.1853, and Susannah b.1855. Their mother died in London in 1868.

There are no census records for Helena after 1861, it is more than likely that she lived in St. Helena where her father died in 1898. Helena and her sister, Phoebe, both unmarried, appear in the census of 1921, living in Worthing, where she died, aged 67yrs, on 5th December 1927. Her address at the time of her death was 39, Heene Road. Probate was granted to her sister, Phoebe Mary Moss, spinster, effects, £2596 3s 6d. Value 2022 - £173,700.

About Jamestown

The capital of Saint Helena, a remote island located 1200 miles off the West coast of Africa, is Jamestown. The town was founded in 1659 by the British East India Company, and the island is still a United Kingdom Overseas Territory. The island is so isolated that it was chosen to be a place of exile for Britain's political prisoners, including Napoleon. Longwood House, where he lived until his death, still stands.
