Life story

Life story

Ross, the name of Helen's father is unusual and so is his place of birth. In the 1861 Census it is on the Sea' and on the 1871 Census it is on the Atlantic'. This might indicate that his father was a sailor but when Ross married Margaret Ann Whiteside in 1850 his father's occupation is given as silversmith'. Ross was a stationer and bookseller. Helen, born in 1851, was baptised at St James, Preston, Lancashire, on 18 August. She appears to have lived at home all her life and when her mother became a lodging house keeper in the 1880s she helped her. When Helen died of phthisis (the old term for pulmonary tuberculosis} on 1 February 1884 she was living at 3, Western Place, Worthing. Her sister, Mary, was with her. Her mother had died the previous year and is also buried at Heene.
