Life story

Life story

Harriet was the daughter of  Rev.William Robbins, a clerk in Holy Orders, Vicar of Shropham in Norfolk, and his wife, Harriet Ruth Lovick. She was born on 1 June 1841 at Needham and was baptised there  on 15 July.

In 1863 the Robbins family were left a third share of the estate of Rev. John Lovick Johnson, which before costs and expenses totalled £8,400, because Harriet's mother's maiden name had been Lovick.

Harriet and her younger sister, Margaret, were both married on 23  April 1868 at Shropham Parish Church. Harriet and Edward Smyth Thorpe were married by  Rev William Smyth Thorpe, Edward's father, but Margaret and Dr. Henry John Buck, MD surgeon, were married by Rev William Robbins,  father of Harriet and Margaret.

Harriet and Edward moved to Huddersfield where Edward was curate at Holy Trinity but  he died in 1878 and by 1881 Harriet had moved to 6 Shelley Road, Broadwater.

By 1901, Harriet was living at Richmond House, West Worthing, and was still living there in 1911 but  when she died on 14 May 1917 aged 75, her address was Borough House, Old Town, Eastbourne, East Sussex.

Her first name was spelt in various ways but was Harriet on her birth certificate, She chose to enter it as Harriette on Censuses where she was head of the household.
