Story

Harriett Nichols was born in Brighton, Sussex, in 1865, she was the daughter of William Robert Nichols, 25yrs, Sergeant Queen’s 9th Royal Regiment of Lancers, and Mary Ann Tree, 24yrs, nee Nicholes. She was 1 of 8 children, and the family moved according to army postings, she lived in Aldershot and Woolwich as a child.

On 23rd May 1885 at St. Andrew’s, Portslade, Harriett, 19yrs, married Walter Peters, 23yrs, he was a general labourer. They had 7 children, Martin b.1887, Rosina b.1892, Mary Ann b.1894, Albert b.1895, Annie b.1896, Edith b.1900, and Florence b.1904.

By 1901 Walter and Harriett had moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at 9, Elm Grove; Walter was employed as a brickmaker, but Harriett was widowed on 28th August 1907, when Walter died, aged 46yrs.

Harriett remained living at Elm Grove, she worked as a laundress with her 17yr. old daughter Mary Ann. In 1914 her eldest son, Martin James, enlisted in the army, he served with the Royal Sussex Regiment in the UK until 1916.

Harriett died on 13th June 1924, aged 59yrs.
