Life story

Life story

Harold was born in Bolton, the son of Joseph and Helen nee Ross. His father owned a cotton mill and was also a town councillor. Harold studied at Oxford and later joined his father's business. When war was declared, he joined 8th London Rifles as a 2nd lieutenant. He was promoted to lieutenant in January 1916. Harold fought at Messines and Ypres. His records give his address as "Ardyne Lodge" Mill Road, Worthing which is where his parents were living. At the end of 1923, Harold married Miss May Gordon Jones, daughter of retired Indian Army Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Jones. Her family lived in Durrington. The couple had two sons, Ronald Gordon b1924 and Alastair Gordon b1927. Their home was at "Vernham House" 26 Mill Road, Worthing. Harold died here on 24th April 1934. Probate was granted on 4th July to John Hutcheson McDonald accountant, Hugh Maine Ross sugar agent and Ian Somerled McDonald barrister. Effects £78911 4s 3d.

Harold's widow May moved to Percival's Hotel, Marine Parade, Worthing. She died in 1982 and was buried at Durrington Cemetery.
