Life story

Life story

Gladys was born in Peckham, the daughter of Albert and Ellen. She was baptised at St Jude's Church, Peckham on 23 August 1891. Her father was a bootmaker and dealer. Gladys went to school at Woods Road in Southwark. She trained as a dressmaker. On 17 July 1911, Gladys married Ernest Anderson Hughes at Holy Trinity Church, Stroud Green. Ernest was a tailor's cutter, eventually becoming a master tailor. The couple moved to Worthing, living at 1 Elm Grove on the corner of Tarring Road. Gladys died on 31st October 1918 of influenza.
