Life story

Life story

Both Gladys and her sister, Eveline, were born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but were British by parentage. Their mother, Diana Emily, nee Tibbits, was born in Leicestershire, and their father, Eli Ebenezer Hill, a stockbroker, was born in Somerset. In 1901 Gladys was a pupil at Benhilton College, a very small school in Sutton, run by her aunt Donna Maria Henry, her mother's sister. Gladys remained single but Eveline married John Abraham Nonhebel and had a son, Gordon. On 24 June 1905, Diana, Gladys, Eveline and 4 year-old Gordon arrived at Southampton from Rio de Janeiro. The 1911 Census shows them living in Worthing at St Chads (no.12) St Michael's Road. Eveline seems to have parted from her husband, who was still living. Also at St Chads was Kenneth Malcolm Templeton aged 3, described as a visitor. In fact, the boy was the son of Eveline and a man surnamed Templeton. At some point Kenneth was given the surname Nonhebel. Gladys died in Groombridge Nursing Home, Chaucer Road, Worthing, on 5 April 1922 aged 36. She had had an operation for a suppurating cyst of the ovary but died 4 hours later.
