Life story

Life story

Gertrude's maiden name was Baily. Her father, William Edward Baily, was described as a brewer scientist. Her mother was also called Gertrude. Gertrude Sarah's birthplace was a village called Paul near Penzance, Cornwall. The family had 3 servants - a cook, a housemaid and a nurse.

William Baily died in 1903. Born in Mansfield, he had an aptitude for the sciences and had left Mansfield to live in Cornwall soon after Gertrude's birth, living there for the rest of his life. He collected a wide range of items from the skeleton of a Grampus (a large species of dolphin found on Marizion beach) to bird's eggs (frowned upon today). He housed his Museum in a former Roman Catholic Church made of corrugated iron transported to his Cornish garden from Battersea, London. Shortly before his death he gave his collection to Mansfield Museum where it can still be seen today.

Where Gertrude was living in 1901 is not known but by 1911 she was at The Acre, in Boundary Road, Worthing. Towards the end 1915 she married Frank Kinsey Munro Thomas, a company director, at East Preston. He was born and baptised in Bengal, India, but was educated in England. He served in the Royal Lancashire Regiment during the First War reaching the rank of Captain and his Medal Index Card gives two addresses - Dovercourt, Essex, and The Acre. Boundary Road, Worthing.

Gertrude died on 12 May 1927 of pulmonary tuberculosis and heart failure with her husband present.
