Life story

Life story

Gerhard was born in Malta to Arnold (known as William) and Jane (also known as Jeannie). Gerhard's Father worked as a clerk for the PandO company. (In 1844 PandO began offering passenger services to let people take a sea tour to destinations including Gibraltar, Athens and Malta from Southampton). Gerhard had one Sister called Edith Margaret who was also born in Malta in 1887. At some point between 1887 and 1905 the family moved to England, where the family lived for many years at 'Casa Melita' Eton Road Worthing.

Gerhard came from a well to do family, his Grandfather also called Gerhard (ludovicus Meuter) was born in 1820 in Germany and he worked as a Professor of Commerce and Political Economy at the Verviers College in Belgium. He arrived in England from France on the 3rd August 1845, and married Margaret Gordon Whytt on 26th December 1848 at Highgate Middlesex. They lived at 21 Langdon Road Upper Holloway Middlesex. Gerhard's Great Grandfather known as Arnoldus Albertus Meuter was a Captain and Private Secretary to General Dumouriez (General Dumouriez was born in France in 1739. He entered the French Army in 1758 and served with distinction against the Prussions in the Seven Years War. King Louis XV sent him on secret diplomatic missions to Madrid in 1767 and Poland in 1770. He became General in the French Revolutionary wars and won the battle of Valmy in 1792. He was also Minister of Foreign Affairs. There is no record of Gerhard's occupation, he was living with his parents in 1911 at Eton Road Worthing, and the census shows that he was not working. There is also no record of Gerhard marrying.

Gerhard died on 2nd February 1912 at Eton Road Worthing of Tuberculosis of the lungs and heart failure, his Father was present at the death.
