Life story

Life story

Georgiana Mills was born on 22nd October 1875 in Worthing, she was the first child of George J. Mills, 55yrs, and his second wife, Georgiana, nee Riches, 27yrs. She had 5 siblings over the following 12 years, William 1876, Jean 1880, James 1881, Robert 1885, and Frank 1887. Her father was a wealthy and successful businessman, his early fortune had been made as a fishmonger in London, and later in his career he became a buyer and seller of land. He was one of a consortium of property buyers who developed large areas of east and west Worthing.

Georgiana lived at Coleville, the family home in Gratwicke Road where her father died in 1903 and her mother in 1913. In December 1915, aged 39yrs, she married a Church of England vicar, the Rev. Harbert Tanner, 65yrs. They continued living in Worthing where her husband was attached to St. Andrew's Church and held Chaplaincies at St. Monica's Home and the Grange Convalescent Home.

In 1921 Georgiana was widowed and she converted Coleville into a convalescent home where she was Matron and joint proprietor with her brother, Robert H. Mills. Coleville eventually became a rest home for the elderly and only closed shortly before her death, aged 83yrs, on 17th June 1959.
