Life story

George was born in East Molesey, the son of George James Saunders and his wife Emily. He was baptised at St Paul's Church, Kent Town on 16th December 1866. His father was a commercial clerk. By 1871, the family were living in Greenwich. When George Snr. retired, the family moved to Worthing, living at Chappell Croft in Mill Road.

On 20th June 1912, George married Agnes Violet Vivia Beckles, the daughter of Rev. Henry Beckles, the former Rector of Heene church. A daughter, Crystal Mary Hope was born in 1917 (baptised on 23rd December in Chelsea). By 1924, the family were living in West Dean near  Chichester. Later they moved to The Dower House in Walberton. It was here that Agnes died on 29th January 1932. In 1939, George was living at The Gardiner Hotel in Heene Terrace. He later moved to 1 Heene Court Mansions. George died on 16th December 1950 at "St Medans" Newlands Road, East Kilbride, Lanarkshire. Probate was granted on 4th April 1951 to Westminster Bank Ltd. Effects £24685 8s 11d (approx £770K in 2020).

“Artery test to prove his death”

Mr George Walter Saunders of East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, formerly of 1 Heene Court Mansions, Heene Terrace, Worthing who died on December 16th, left £24685 8s 11d (£24572 0s 3d net) of which duty of £3096 has been paid.

He left five guineas to the doctor who opened a principal artery to ensure that he was dead, and he desired to be buried in the same grave as his wife at Heene. He also left £50 to the Rector and churchwardens of Heene church who were charged with the upkeep of the family graves, and £50 to the governors of Durrington cemetery for the upkeep of family graves there.
