Life story

George Henry Rope was born on 16th January 1853 in St. George Hanover Square, his parents were John William Rope, confectioner, 28yrs, and Mary, 24yrs, nee Yeomans; he was the second son and 1 of 6 children.

At the age of 18yrs, George was already working as a wine merchant, a career he stayed with for the rest of his working life. George lived with his family into his thirties, he never married, and seems to have lived as a boarder at various places in the city. His business address in 1902 was Gresham Buildings, Basinghall Street, EC.

In 1921 George was living in Cookham, Maidenhead, Berkshire.

George died on 5th May 1930, aged 78yrs, at Maxted Park, Harrow-on-the-Hill, Middlesex. He had two addresses, 27a, Old Broad Street, London, and Angleside, Ashley Road, Epsom, Surrey. Probate was granted to Alfred Cyril Ridsdale, retired civil servant, and John William Cunningham, broker, effects £719 7s 11d. Value 2022 - £55,500.
