Life story

George was born on 6 May 1839 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. He was the son of Augustus Frederick Oakes (1808-52) and Fanny Dolby (1808-43.) 

His father was a Captain in the Madras Artillery who wrote a number of instructional books/ manuals. These included: 'The course of induction in laboratory work and directions for making percussion caps etc.' 'The gunner's assistant' 'The officer's assistant which was connected with guard duties showing the corresponding  motions of the musket, sword and carbine etc.' 'Instructions and regulations for field battery exercise and movements for the Madras Regiment of Artillery' 'The young artillery officer's assistant etc.' 

George was one of five brothers: Arthur Edmund Oakes (1834-63) Augustus Richard Oakes (1837-76) Herbert Thomas Oakes (1840-42) Alfred Charles Oakes (1841-1900). He had one sister, Charlotte Elizabeth Oakes (1836-1923) One half brother, Sidney Hugh Ashley Oakes (1847-1918) Two half sisters, Fanny Augusta Maria Oakes (1849-1936) and Frederica Augusta Balfour Oakes (1852-1900). 

His mother was 35 when she died on 30th October 1843 in Leicestershire and his father died in Rangoon, Bengal on 12th April 1852. He was aged 44.

The Last Will and Testament for George Henry Oakes was dated 12th March 1901.
