Story

George was born in Upper Beeding, the son of Hugh and Elizabeth. He was baptised at St Peter’s church, Upper Beeding on 8th February 1835. His father was employed as a huckster, selling items from door to door. By the time he was 18, George was working as a servant in Steyning. In 1861, he was working as a butler in the household of George Orme, a landowner in Worthing. On 6th October 1864, George married Maria Kate Lucas at St Nicholas Church in Brighton. They moved to Worthing where George opened a baker’s shop in Brunswick Road.

The business was a successful one and George gained a reputation for providing excellent food at many occasions such as weddings, receptions and business meetings. He sometimes worked with the licensees of The Brunswick Hotel providing food for the parties held there.

In 1877, tragedy struck the family when George and Maria’s son Ernest died of diphtheria aged 9. By 1891, three of his children were helping in the business. George died on 14th December 1898. Probate was granted on 16th February 1899 to Maria Kate Kidd widow. Effects £3047 16s 2d.
