Life story

Life story

George was born in Goring, Sussex, the son of William and Sarah. He was baptised at Goring on 4th May 1817. On 14th April 1838, George married Elizabeth Guile at West Tarring church. This was with parental consent as Elizabeth was underage. The couple lived in Heene where George worked on a local farm. The couple had 11 children: Elizabeth, Elsy, Esther, Eliza, Edward, Stephen, Eli, Emma, Ellen, George and Alice. George's wife Elizabeth died in 1885 and was buried at Heene. George lived with his son George Jnr, a bricklayer and his family in Heene Road. He died in the hospital wing of East Preston workhouse on 15th May 1898. Probate was granted on 1st June to Eli Haylor. Effects £50.
