Life story

Life story

George was born in Alverstoke, Hants, the son of Edwin and Jemima. He was baptised at Forton, Gosport on 15th September 1850. When his father died in 1857 aged only 30, his widow took in laundry and her two eldest boys, George aged 11 and Arthur aged 8 worked in the local brickfields. On 18th August 1861, George's mother Jemima married Robert Willett at St Thomas's Church, Portsmouth. He was a widower with six children. The family moved to Worthing, living in the Navarino area east of the town. On 21st December 1874, George married Sarah Elizabeth Trim at St George's Church, Worthing. The couple moved to Heene, living near the brickyards at the west end of Tarring Road, north of the railway line. By 1881, George was running his own brickmaking business employing 13 men and 9 boys. George and Sarah had 9 children by 1901 and several of the boys worked in the brickmaking business. By then, the family had moved to The Drive in West Worthing. Sarah died in August 1902 and was buried at Heene. On 29th October 1908, George married Martha Catherine Lucas, a widow with a daughter, at Heene church. By the time he was 60, George had left the brickmaking business and worked as a market gardener. He and Martha had a son Eric in 1910. By 1914, the family had moved to "Terringe" a cottage in South Street, Tarring. George died here on 9th April 1914. Probate was granted on 20th January 1917 to George Henry Greenfield cycle dealer and Martha Catherine Greenfield widow. Effects £1514 8s 6d. Martha died in 1940.
