Life story

George Nelson Emmet was born in Paddington, Middlesex, on 1st July 1870; he was the son of George Nelson Emmet, snr. 27yrs, a solicitor, and Ellen Lucy Moreton, 25yrs, nee Empsom. George had 4 siblings, Amy b.1868, Robert b.1872, Henry b.1875, and Ernest b.1878.

In 1891, aged 20yrs, George was a student of theology, King's College, he was ordained priest, Church of England, in 1895, and from 1894-1898 he was Curate of St. Andrew's, Leytonstone, East London. In 1898 he moved to Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, in 1903 1906 he was at Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire, and from 1906 George was at Totternhoe Vicarage, Dunstable, Bedfordshire.

On 20th June 1900, aged 29yrs, George married Elise Emily Gruning, 28yrs, at St. Peter's Church, Ealing. (See below for a detailed newspaper report of the service). Their first child, Elise Joyce, was born in 1902 in Hertfordshire, and twins, George Nelson and Enid Dorothy, were born in 1906 in Dunstable. Sadly, Enid Dorothy died the following year.

In 1921 George, Elise and his mother, Ellen, were all living in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, where George was vicar. George and Elise remained in Hartley Wintney until 1930 when George resigned due to failing health and they moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived in Heene Way, at a property named Hartley Row.

George died on 12th September 1931, aged 61yrs, probate was granted to his widow, Elise Emily Emmet, effects, £1332 2s 6d. Value 2022 - £96,600.

The Rev. George Nelson Emmet, who died at Worthing on Saturday, had several Ealing connections. His mother formerly lived at 19, Madeley-road, his wife, who was a Miss Gruning, lived at 3, Blakesley Avenue, and he was a nephew of Col. C. A. Empson, 26. Grange-road. He was born July 1, 1870, and was ordained as curate of St. Andrew's, Leytonstone, in 1894. He afterwards held curacies at Edlesborough and Abbots Langley until 1906, when he was preferred to the living of Totternhoe. From 1920 until last September, when he resigned on account of failing health, he was vicar of Hartley Witney,

Newspaper report of the marriage of Rev. George N. Emmet to Miss Elise E. Gruning. 20.06.1900

The uncle of the bridegroom, the Rev. W. E. Emmet, with the Rev. H. E. Emmet (his brother) and the Rev. A. H. Parnell, officiated at the marriage of the Rev. George Nelson Emmet, the son of the late Mr. George Nelson Emmet, of Gordon Square, with Elise Emily, the daughter of the late Mr. Henry Gruning and Mrs. Gruning, of 3, Blakesley Avenue, Ealing. The ceremony took place at St. Peter's, Ealing, on the 20th ult. The service was fully choral, the hymns "Thine for ever," "0, Perfect Love,' and "Now thank we all our God" being sung. Mr. J. Cliffe Forrester was the organist. The bride was given away by her brother, Mr. H. H. Gruning. She wore a skirt and train of rich ivory duchesse satin, with a high Empire belt, the yoke and transparent sleeves being of tucked chiffon. The gown was enhanced with Brussels appliqué lace, and she carried a bouquet of choice white flowers. The bridesmaids were five in number. They were Miss Annie L. Gruning (sister of the bride), Miss Violet Schuster (her cousin), Miss A. H. Bradbury, Miss E. G. Wilson, and Miss A. Bramwell. They appeared in gowns of striped glace with white chiffon and vests of chiffon fastened with narrow green bands of velvet. Their presents from the bridegroom consisted of gold and pearl brooches and bouquets of lilies. Mr. Robert W. Emmet accompanied his brother as groomsman. The after reception was held at 3, Blakesley Avenue, when the guests included Sir Hermann, Lady, and the Misses Weber, Mr. L. Gruning, Dr. and Mrs. Schuster, Mr. H. H. Gruning, Mr. L. Gruning, Miss A. Gruning, Mr. R. W. Emmet, Rev.H. E. Emmet, Mrs. Empson, Mrs. A. Suckling Baron, Col., Mrs., and the Misses Empson, Rev. W. E., Mrs., and Miss Emmet, Mr. P. B.
