Life story

Life story

George was born in Farnham Surrey, the son of John Collins a labourer. He joined the Royal Navy aged just 14 on 13.1.1862. Due to his age an elder family member had to give their consent for him to join up which was his Sister Mary. On his papers it says he was an orphan. In 1866 he volunteered for 10 years continuous service in the Royal Marines. He was stationed at the Eastney Barracks Portsmouth where he was a gunner. George married Eliza Richardson (nee Street) a widow on 12.5.1874 in St. Mary's Church Portsea, she was living at Grigg Street, Portsea, Portsmouth. Eliza was born in Worthing to William and Mary Street and had married Frederick William Richardson in 1865 in Worthing. It is unknown when Frederick died. When George left the Royal Marines in 1876, they must have moved back to Worthing. George died in 1880 at 3 Western Cottages Worthing of phthisis (Tuberculosis) Eliza was present at the death. Eliza is shown on the 1881 census as living in Cobden Road Worthing.
