Life story

Life story

George was born in Broadwater, Worthing to William, a tailor, and Sophia Carter, née Viney and was baptised in Broadwater on 16 April. His earliest occupation was boat builder. He married Amelia Dancer on 13 June 1867 also in Broadwater. They do not appear to have had any children. In 1871 they were living with Ann Dancer, Amelia’s mother, at 45, Marine Parade, Broadwater, which she ran as a lodging house. Amelia assisted her mother and George was a journeyman carpenter. By 1881, Ann presumably having died, George and Amelia had moved to 76, Marine Parade, (or perhaps the street been re-numbered?) which Amelia ran as a lodging house while George still worked as a carpenter. In 1891 George and Amelia ran a lodging house together at ‘Kai Terri’, no. 44, Rowlands Road, Worthing. At the age of 50 George died at ‘Auckland House’, no. 42. Rowlands Road.
