Story

Frederick was born in Bonchurch near Ventnor, the son of Charles and Ann nee Booker. He was baptised in Ventnor on 25th March 1855. His father worked as a servant at “Woodlinch”, a large house in the village. Charles died in 1871. Frederick worked as a carpenter and joiner and for a while lived in the London area. He returned to Ventnor and on 17th April 1881 married Fanny Wheeler. From 1887 to 1898, besides working as a carpenter, Frederick ran The Eagle Tavern at 52 High Street (the building is now called Jellicoe House). Fanny died on 13th October 1893 and was buried in Ventnor Cemetery. On 18th November 1895, Frederick married Rosa Elizabeth Sarah Maunder at Holy Trinity church, Ryde. The couple had two children, Hilda b1896 and Rose Elizabeth b1900. By 1901, the family were living in Albert Street, Ventnor where Rosa (or Rose) was running a lodging house. Frederick was boarding in Washington, Sussex. The family moved to Worthing, living firstly in Becket Road and then in Thorn Road by 1917. In 1916, daughter Hilda married a Canadian soldier at Heene and moved abroad. Frederick died c17th September 1923 and was buried at Heene on 19th. No probate.

After the Second World War, Rosa moved to Pearson’s Retreat in Brougham Road and died in 1950.
