Life story

Life story

Frederick was born in South Norwood, Surrey, the son of George and Caroline Amelia. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Beckenham in Kent. George, a house painter died in 1886 and Caroline began work as a laundress to bring money in. Her two eldest sons Frederick and William worked as errand boys. By 1901, Frederick was working as a gardener. On 22nd April 1905, Frederick married Ellen (Helen) Elizabeth Robeson in Penge. The couple moved to Shirley near Croydon and Frederick found work as a chauffeur. Violet Helen was born in 1905 followed by Gladys Gwendoline in 1907, Freda in 1911 and Gordon Frederick in 1914. By this time the family had moved to Cuckfield, Sussex where Frederick worked at Cuckfield Park. By 1928, Frederick had retired and the family moved to Worthing, living at "Shirley" 1 Ripley Terrace, Ripley Road (later 75 Ripley Road). Ellen died in 1930 and was buried at Heene. Frederick died on 15th April 1942.Probate was granted on 29th July to Gladys Gwendoline Smith (wife of David Langlois Smith). Effects £520.
