Life story

Frederick Albert Hookey was born in Stepney, Middlesex, in 1850, he was the son of Robert Henry Roberts Hookey, 50yrs, Greengrocer, and Jane, 40yrs, nee Collins, he had 3 siblings, Sophia, 22yrs, George, 4yrs, and William, 2yrs. In 1858 Frederick's father died, and his mother moved the family to Chichester, Sussex, his father's birthplace, and she worked as a beer seller in East Street.

Frederick began work as a draper's assistant, he moved to London and in 1881 he was a draper's clerk in St. Pancras. His future wife, Emily Rosamund Hensman, was also a draper's assistant in London and they married in St. Pancras in January 1883. They had 2 children, Catherine Mary, born 1887, and Frederick, born 1900.

By 1891, Frederick had settled his family in Eastbourne, Sussex, he had his own drapery business with 3 employees. In 1901 Frederick and family were in Funtington, near Chichester, and by 1911 they had moved to Tarring Road, Worthing, Sussex, where they ran a drapery shop, Emily and their daughter, Catherine, both assisted in the business.

Frederick had retired by 1921, Emily was still occupied as a draper, and their son, Frederick, was an electrical engineering student. Catherine married in 1922.

Frederick Albert died on 5th November 1926, aged 76yrs, probate was granted to his wife, Emily, effects, £3863 9s 10d. Value 2023 - £291,000.
