Story

Frederick Hire was born on 10th February 1846 in Newtown, Isle of Wight. His parents were George Augustus Hire, RN. 34yrs, born in Scotland, and Anna (Hannah) nee Case, 27yrs, born in Norfolk. He had 3 siblings, Edward b.1843, Augusta b.1850, and Harriett b.1854. In 1861, aged 15yrs, Frederick enrolled as Rank Staff Captain, Royal Navy, it was the beginning of a 33-year career as a commissioned officer with the Royal Navy which saw him retire with the rank of Captain in 1899.

In 1882, aged 36yrs, Frederick married Gertrude Eleanor Bernays, at St. John’s Church, Chatham, Kent, she was born in Lewisham, 1857. They had no children, and after Frederick retired, they moved to Worthing, living at ‘Idlehurst’, Winchester Road, where Gertrude died, aged 45yrs, in1903.

Frederick’s second marriage, to Ohilde Lisa Majendie, 40yrs, took place in 1905, Steyning, Sussex, but he was again widowed when she died just 2 years later. Frederick’s third marriage was in 1909, to Jane Cicely Winifred Ball, 51yrs, spinster, at St. Peter’s, Stratton, Gloucestershire, he was 63yrs.

They continued to live in Winchester Road, where Frederick died, aged 65yrs, on 27th November 1911. Probate was granted to his widow and his sister, Harriett Hire, spinster. Effects, £3220 5s 7d. Value 2021 – £389K.

Obituary

NAVY. Capt. Frederick Hire, retired, died on the 27th ult. Idlehurst, Worthing, aged 65. Capt. Hire became Navigating Sub-Lieutenant March 11, 1866, and was promoted to Navigating Lieutenant April 24, 1872, serving in that rank in the Euryalus during the Egyptian War, 1882 (medal and bronze star). Two years later, during the naval and military operations in the Eastern Soudan, he acted as Harbourmaster at Suakin, and for his services was promoted to Staff Commander, with seniority May 20, 1884 (clasp). He became Staff Captain March 25, 1898 and retired with the rank of Captain Sept. of the following year. Capt. Hire last served as Harbourmaster of the Hamoaze.
