Life story

Frederick was born in Brighton, the son of Thomas and Frances (Fanny). He was baptised at St Nicholas Church, Brighton on 13 July 1828. Frederick's father died in early 1841. He spent his youth learning the tailoring business eventually opening his own shop in Worthing. On 18 August 1851, Frederick married Emma Lindup at Hove. Their daughter Frances was born in 1852, followed by Frederick in 1855, Clara in 1857, Henry in 1859, Richard in 1862, Charles in 1864 and Louis (Lewis) in 1870. Emma died on 1 December 1878. The following year, Frederick married a widow Ada Sarah Elizabeth Ware at St Martin in the Fields Church. They had three sons, Frank b 1880, Alfred b1882 and Lionel (Jack) b1885.  After Frederick retired, the family lived in London for a few years but returned to Worthing in 1908. Frederick died on 25 March 1916. Ada continued to live in Worthing and died in 1935. She is buried at Durrington.

Probate granted on 20 May 1916 to Ada Cripps widow, James Blaker builder and Lionel Jack Redgrave Cripps architect. Effects £20916 10s 6d (approx £1.2million in 2020).

"Death of Mr Frederick Cripps"

His Long Local Associations

The death occurred on Saturday at the age of ninety-two of Mr Frederick Cripps, who resided at "Arcana" Shelley Road. Mr Cripps was born at Brighton but settled in Worthing about seventy years ago, establishing a tailor's business in South Street, in premises now occupied by Messrs James Hacker and Son. On retiring from business, he lived a quiet life but remained active up to a period of six months ago when his health began to fail. Mr Cripps was twice married and five sons survive him, two by the first marriage and three by the second. The funeral took place this afternoon at Heene Cemetery and was preceded by a service at St Botolph's Church.
