West Sussex Journal 25th August 1885

“sad death of a boy through a fall”

The West Sussex Coroner A W Rawlison Esq, held an inquest on Friday at the Brunswick Hotel on the body of Fredk. Frank Constable.- Warden Constable, 2 Heene Mews, Worthing, coachman, deceased’s father said his son is five years and six months old. His brother and cousin brought him home in an unconscious state about half past eleven on Saturday morning. Witness had cautioned him about getting on the pipes from which he had been informed he fell. The child died on Wednesday morning.- Sophia, wife of Wm. Wiggins deposed that, hearing a scream on Saturday morning she went out to where some pipes were placed against the wall and found deceased, who had been picked up by her little girl and his sister. Her daughter told her he had fallen from the highest part of the wall. He said he had hurt his legs. Put him into his brother’s and cousin’s arms and sent him home. He told her he fell on the pipes and hurt his legs and head. It was four feet from the top of the wall to where he was lying. Mr W S Simpson, surgeon said he found deceased partially conscious. There was a bruise of the left side of his forehead and considerable bleeding from the left ear, due to a fracture at the base of the skull. Told his father that the case would terminate fatally. The boy told witness that he had a fall off the wall, and mentioned iron pipes. The cause of death was compression of the brain, caused by internal haemorrhage, resulting from the fracture of the skull.

Verdict “accidental death”
