Life story

Frederick Bassett was born in Islington, London, he was baptised on 8th December 1861 at All Saints, Islington. He was the son of Daniel Smith Bassett, 36yrs, Commercial Clerk, and Charlotte, 35yrs, nee Martin. Frederick had 3 siblings, Emma b.1860, Annie b.1866 and William b.1868; the family moved from Islington to Lewisham and then to Holborn.

Frederick became a civil servant in the Home Office, starting as a copyist, he then became a clerk, and finally worked for the Home Office Prisons Commission.

On 25th August 1889, aged 27yrs, he married Annie Billinghurst, 23yrs, at St. Sepulchre, Holborn. They had 2 daughters, Gertrude Annie, b.1890, and Mabel Agnes, b.1893. They lived in Feltham in 1901 and in Hounslow in 1911, eventually retiring to Worthing where they lived in Harrow Road at a property called Minterne, where Frederick died, on 9th March 1930, aged 68yrs. Probate was granted to Gertrude Annie Bassett, spinster, effects £611 15s 1d. Value 2021 - £42K.
