Life story

Frank Tapley was born on 5th November 1836 in Billingsgate, Middlesex, and baptised on 21st December 1836 at St. Boltoph, Billingsgate; he was the son of Francis Tapley, 40yrs, fishmonger, and Elizabeth, 39yrs, nee Winch.

Frank became a fish salesman working at Billingsgate fish market where his father and grandfather had had a successful business for many years. In 1865 Frank was admitted into the Freedom of the City of London, by patrimony, in the Company of Fishmongers.

Frank, 24yrs, married Sarah Minter Claris, 23yrs, in Canterbury, Kent, in 1860.

Sarah and Frank lived in Croydon for over 20yrs, they had no children. By 1891, Frank had retired, and the couple were living in Eastbourne, Sussex. In 1901 they had moved to Folkstone, Kent, and by 1911 they were living at 12, Milton Street, Worthing, Sussex, where Frank died, aged 76yrs, on 28th February 1913.

Probate was granted to his widow, effects £239 18s 5d. Value 2023 - £35,000.
