Life story

Life story

Francis was born in Hendon, Middx, the son of Anthony and Elizabeth. He was baptised at St Mary's church, Hendon on 13th January 1803. Anthony Rich was an attorney in the King's Remembrancer's Office, Inner Temple, London. As a young man, Francis worked for the Registrar's Office in the Court of Chancery in the City. On 27th December 1842, Francis married Frances (Fanny) Ricarda Wetherell at Ticehurst, Sussex. This was a double wedding as Fanny's sister Eleanora was married in the same ceremony. (The 1881 census noted that Frances was deaf from birth). For a while the couple lived with Francis' parents in Walton on Thames, Surrey. Between 1860 and 1865, they lived at 2 Spanish Place, Manchester Square, London. Francis and Fanny had no children. By 1871, Francis had retired and the couple were living in Worthing at 9 Bath Place. Francis' brother Anthony already lived in Worthing, at Chapel Croft in Mill Road. In 1875, they were living at "Stoke Knoll" in Bishopstoke, Hants. Francis died here on 28th September 1878. Probate was granted on 28th October to Frances Ricarda Rich widow. Effects under £6000.

Frances moved to Eastbourne before moving to St Leonards where she died in 1896.

Francis' brother Anthony lived at Chappell Croft in Mill Road. A lifelong bachelor, he died in 1891 and is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London. Half of his estate was bequeathed to Charles Darwin.
