Story

Frances (Fanny) was born in Westbury-on-Severn, the daughter of Reverend Richard Wetherell and his wife Caroline. (the 1881 census records that she was deaf from birth). Frances was baptised by her father at Westbury on 24th October 1813. By 1820, Richard was vicar of Ticehurst in East Sussex, living at Pashley House (Manor). Caroline died in 1833 and in 1836, Richard married a widow Sara Maria Duff in Bath. On 27th December 1842, Fanny married Francis Henry Rich at Ticehurst. It was a joint marriage ceremony with her sister Eleanora. For a while the couple lived with Francis’ parents in Walton-on-Thames. Between 1860 and 1865, they lived at 2 Spanish Place, Manchester Square, London. They had no children. After Francis retired, he and Fanny moved to Worthing, living at 9 Bath Place. However, by 1875, they were living at “Stoke Knoll” in Bishopstoke, Hampshire. Francis died there on 26th September 1878. Fanny moved to Eastbourne and then to 55 Pevensey Road, St Leonards-on-Sea. Frances died here on 10th April 1896. Probate was granted on 30th May to Herbert Francis Hayes Newington physician and surgeon and James Henry Crawley-Boevey solicitor. Effects £12957 1s 8d.

Pashley Manor was owned by Caroline Wetherell’s family, the Mays. It came into Richard Wetherell’s hands when Caroline married him. Richard and Caroline owned a plantation in Jamaica. When the slaves were freed in 1836, they were awarded through a Government compensation scheme, a share of £2820 6s 3d (approx. £191220 today).
