Life story

Frances' maiden name was Mullens. Her parents were Richard Mullens, an attorney and solicitor, and his first wife, Anne. Frances became a music teacher. In 1881 at the age of 27 she was on the staff of a boarding school under the headship of Elizabeth Ann Blyth in Easing wold, Yorkshire, one of 5 teachers . There were 10 pupils between the ages of 11 and 17. By 1891 she was teaching in a much larger school

Milton Mount College, in Gravesend, Kent -whose headmistress was Ethel Mary Conder with a staff of 11 teachers, 3 student teachers and 153 pupils. Milton Mount had been founded in 1871 by Rev, William Guest for the education  of the daughters of Congregational ministers. 

Frances married William Pilling, of private means, almost 20 years older than herself, on 4  September 1897 at Haringey, London. 

By 1901 they were living in Heene Road, Worthing, close to the Parish Rooms. They had no children. William died  in 1915 and when Frances died in 1932 her address was 10, Cumberland-road, Kew, Surrey. She left £5953 6s 2d.
