Death of Mr H Potter - Close of a long and useful career

We regret to record the death of Mr Henry Potter, which took place at his residence, Beech Croft, Guildford, on Wednesday, at the age of 82. The deceased gentleman, who was up to 1895, the senior partner of the firm of Messrs. Potter and Crundwell, solicitors of Farnham and Guildford, was the son of Mr George Potter, solicitor of Guildford. He was himself admitted a solicitor in 1854, in which year he came to Farnham. He started in practice alone, but after a short time he joined Mr Ben Nicholls. When he later died, Mr Potter again carried on the practice alone for a time, but was eventually joined by Mr Ernest Crundwell. Mr Potter had a long professional connection with various public authorities in the district. He was clerk in the Highway Board from the time it was formed in 1864, to the time of its dissolution in 1894, under the Act which created the Rural and Urban District Councils. He was clerk to the Commissioners of Taxes from 1881 until his retirement in 1907, clerk to the Frimley School Board, and clerk to the Farnham and Frimley Burial Boards. The deceased gentleman was for some years chairman of the governors of the Farnham Grammar School, and a trustee of Trimmer's Almshouses, and he was the only surviving member of the original body of trustees of Trimmer's Cottage Hospital. He succeeded the late Mr George Trimmer as member of the County Council for Farnham urban , and held that position for a term and a half. For some years Mr Potter was a member if the Guildford Board of Guardians, and he filled the office of vice-chairman during the latter part of the time. Deceased married the daughter of Mr William Ingle, of Guildford, who died in 1910. He leaves seven children, four sons and three daughters. On of his sons, Mr F.C. Potter, is a member of the firm of Messrs. Potter and Crundwell, and a daughter was at one time matron of Trimmer's Cottage Hospital, Farnham, and is now matron of Tilford Convalescent Home.
