Story

Florence was born in Bellary, Madras, India, the daughter of Captain George Henry Oakes and his wife Frances Fanny. George was serving with the Madras Staff Corps as Overseer of the Commsariat Department. This dealt with supplying the British Army with food, clothing etc but not weapons. Florence lived with her parents all her life and never married. The family returned to England permanently by 1891 and settled in Weymouth until George retired in 1896. Florence and her parents visited Worthing in 1901 and made the decision to live there, firstly at “Ferndale” in Winchester Road in 1905 and then at “Teviotdale” in Mill Road. George died here on 4th June 1909. Florence and her widowed mother moved to “Montrose” in Belsize Road. Fanny died on 16th August 1926 and was buried beside her husband at Heene. Florence spent the rest of her life at 37 Belsize Road until just before her death in 1961. She died at Charlwood Nursing Home, 2 Farncombe Road, Worthing on 16th August. Probate was granted on 30th August to Lloyds Bank Limited. Effects £3757 5s 6d.
