Life story

Life story

Fanny was born in Worth, Sussex, the daughter of Edward and his second wife Jane nee Chatfield. She was baptised in Worth church on 3rd October 1858. Her father ran The Fox Railway Inn which was on the Three Bridges Road, close to the station. It was demolished in the 1980's. Fanny was sent to a girl's school in Hurstpierpoint and after her father's death, spent most of her life looking after her mother. Edward died on 14th September 1876 leaving an estate of £3k (£268K today). He also left land near the station, which was sold after his death, leaving his family comfortably off. Mother and daughter moved to Tonbridge, living there until Jane's death on 4th April 1906. Two months after her mother's death, Fanny married James Wickens. The wedding took place at West Tarring church on 14th June. James was a retired clerk nearly twenty years older than Fanny. The couple moved into a house in Harrow Road, Worthing and lived there until James's death on 11th January 1913. In 1939, Fanny was still in Harrow Road, living with a companion and Mary Silvester, her sister-in-law. Fanny died on 17th April 1941. Probate was granted on 16th June to George Silvester Jinman, retired auctioneer and valuer. Effects £1286 16s 10d.
