Life story

Fanny Louisa Webb was born on 10th March 1861 in Islington, Middlesex; she was the daughter of John Webb, 46yrs, mineral water manufacturer, and Sarah, 44yrs, nee Starkey. Fanny was the youngest of 5 children, Sarah 13yrs, Charles 9yrs, Thomas 5yrs, and Mary 3yrs.

On 18th December 1880, Fanny, 19yrs, married Alfred Vernon, 26yrs, at St. Mary, Islington, their son, Harcourt, was born in 1882, and a daughter, Dorothy, in 1887. Alfred traded in floristry supplies, and became a manufacturer of artificial flowers, employing 3 men and 50 women in 1881. By 1891 Alfred had changed trades and was a manager of a boot warehouse, later becoming an agent for a boot manufacturer.

Alfred and Fanny lived in various London areas, including Old Street, Hornsey and Shepperton, before moving to Worthing, Sussex, sometime after 1921, where they lived at 78, Marine Parade. Fanny was widowed when Alfred died, aged 77yrs, on 27th May 1932, but she remained in Worthing, moving to 53, Lansdowne Road; she died on 13th February 1943, at 6, St. Michael's Road, aged 81yrs. Probate was granted to Harcourt Vernon, retired bank official, and Dorothy Jones, (wife of George Percival Jones) effects £6389, value 2022 - £310,400.
