Life story

Life story

Fanny was born in Newport, Monmouthshire in 1848. Her parents were Julia and David Griffiths, a colliery manager. Fanny came from a large family and was educated at home. 

On 19th August 1874, she married Samuel Moss, a timber merchant and Freemason in Cardiff. They had a large family which included twin boys, Harold Griffiths Moss and Raymond Griffiths Moss who were baptised on 3rd April 1892. 

The Mosses were an intelligent and active family. One daughter became a private hospital nurse, two others became governesses and Harold was an editor's clerk on the Worthing Mercury newspaper.

The daughter who had the most distinguished career was Gladys, the first woman police constable in the West Sussex Constabulary. She toured the county on her motorcycle and served for over 20 years between 1919 and 1941. 

Fanny died at 48a Heene Road, Worthing aged 78 on 17th April 1926. Probate was granted on 18th November to Raymond Griffiths Moss motor engineer and Gladys Moss spinster. Effects £246 11s 4d.
