Life story

Life story

Fanny Kitchin nee Swan was born in Birmingham in 1834 but was not baptised until 18th December 1836 in Halifax, Yorkshire. By the time Fanny was 3, she was living with her family in Tidy Street, Brighton. Her father Arthur was a rail guard and her mother was Maria Frances Swan nee Nickson. At the age of 17, Fanny worked for the London North Western Railway as an assistant/waitress in the Wolverton Station Refreshment Rooms near Buckingham. It was a large establishment which had been lavishly redecorated for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1844 and at one time had a staff of 22. Fanny married Joseph Kitchin, a hop and seed merchant, on 6th June 1854 at St Mary, Islington. Although Joseph had been declared bankrupt in 1851, he seemed to have recovered well and they lived comfortably at Dunsdale Mansion, Westerham, Kent, with 8 children, 2 nurses, 2 governesses and numerous servants including a butler. Joseph died in 1881 aged 63 and left a mere £20 to Fanny. They had just moved to 71 Marine Parade, Worthing. By 1881, Fanny was a boarder in a boarding house run by Mrs Persis Martin. The house was called "Ashburton" in Cambridge Road. Fanny remained here until she died on 21st January 1917 aged 82. No probate.
