Life story

Life story

Fanny, a dressmaker, was one of the victims of Worthing's typhoid epidemic, caused by the water supply being contaminated by sewage, claiming the lives of 194 people between 8 May and the autumn of 1893. Fanny was ill for three weeks before she died on 19 August. Her sister, Charlotte, was present. She was born on 23 March 1874 at Stoke-next-Guildford, Surrey, and was only 18 years old. Her father, Thomas was a gardener and her mother, Elizabeth, nee Gibbs, was a laundress. In 1881 the family was living in Broadwater but by 1891 had moved into 6, Heene Cottages in Heene Lane (Road).
