Life story

Ethel Emily was the first born of six children born to parents William Fisher of Aldeburgh Suffolk and Eliza Allen of Bury St Edmunds Suffolk.

Ethel being the eldest had 5 siblings Eliza 1877, Laura 1880, William James 1882, Agatha 1884 Dies 1885, Oscar Charles Edward 1891

Ethels father was a Mariner and her Mother's Father was a fisherman. The family lived in Plomesgate.

In 1881 Ethel was living with her mother and two younger sisters. Her mother's father James Fisher (Ethels Grandfather) was also living with the family, a widow, and working as a fisherman.

when Ethel was 16, she was living in Holland Road Kensington working for a lady and her cousin as a housemaid.

By 1899 in September Ethel married Ernest Albert Scutt. She had her banns read in Heene Worthing Sept 24th and married in Plomesgate on Sept 30th.

Her husband was in the furniture trade and worked as a furniture carman delivering furniture. The family live in Worthing at 13 Milton street to start with before living at No 10. They always had boarders living with them.

In 1903 Ethel and Ernest had a daughter, Stella Edith in Worthing born on 15th December.

The family continue to live at Milton Street moving to No 10 by 1911

In 1915 on 3rd November at the age of 40 Ethel's husband Ernest enlists for Short Service in the Army Veterinary Corps No/ 12729. On his Service records there is a separation allowance of 1/s because the family were not able to live together during his service, sadly during this time Ethel died on November 1st, 1918 at home of Influenza and Cardiac Failure. Sister-in-law Alice Scutt, who was present at Ethel's death becomes Ethel's daughters' guardian.

Ethel was laid to rest on 6th November at Heene Cemetery.

Ethels husband re marries in 1924 and has 3 sons and lives in Worthing till he dies in 1944

Daughter Stella marries in 1926 in Worthing and dies in 1970 in Worthing and did not have any children.

Living at 12 Back Street Aldeburgh. Mother Eliza Fisher 30 married and head of the household. No father on the Census. Ethel is 5, sisters Eliza 3 and Laura 8 Months are on the Census. Husbands Father, James Fisher is living with the family and is a widower 67 years old and a fisherman.

1891 census: 

Working as a housemaid at 148 Holland Road, Kensington, London. Ethel was 15-16 years old Houseowner Ethelred Sladen and her cousin were living on their own means. There were three servants in the house, a cook, Parlour maid and Ethel as the housemaid.

1901 census: 

Living at 13 Milton Street in Worthing. Ethel was 24 years old. Her husband is working as a Furniture Carman which means he was delivering furniture. They had Lodgers (Husband and wife with one child)

1911 census: 

Living at 10 Milton Street Both Ethel and Ernest are 35 years old. Ernest is working as a Furniture Carman. Daughter Stella Edith is 8 years old. They have a male lodger living in their home and he is a Carman
