Life story

Life story

Ethel was born in the village of Up Marden, Sussex, the daughter of Frederick and Annie. She was baptised in nearby Compton on 17 Oct 1897 . Frederick was a police constable and moved several times with his job. By 1914, the family were living in Thorn Road, Worthing. Frederick retired on a police pension of £263 17s per annum. When the pier re-opened in Summer 1913, he became an attendant. In 1920, Ethel married Gilbert Mills, a nurseryman. He had been born in Durrington. His parents ran a greengrocer's shop on the corner of Canterbury Road and South Street, Tarring. Ethel and Gilbert moved in with his parents after their marriage. Ethel died at her parent's home at 3 Thorn Road on 26 Aug. The cause of death was given as "pulmonary tuberculosis 10 months". Probate was granted on 21 Dec to Gilbert Mills, nurseryman. Effects £325 5s 10d (approx. £9400 in 2020).
