Ethel Violet Chilcott was born in October 1873 in Witney, Oxfordshire. She was the daughter of John Chilcott, 26yrs, tailor, and Julia Charlotte, 28yrs, nee Bateman. Ethel had 5 siblings, Gertrude b.1871, Ernest b.1872, Rose b.1878, William b.1882 and Alex b.1886.

The family moved from Oxfordshire to Milverton in Warwickshire where her father ran a very successful gentlemen's tailoring business. Ethel lived with her parents until 1912, when, aged 37yrs, she married Thomas Hodges in Liskeard, Cornwall. Thomas was an engine room artificer with the Royal Navy, he was a widower with one son.

Ethel and Thomas lived in Devonport, they had 2 children, John Chilcott Hodges, born 1913, and Patricia Rosemary Hodges, born 1915.

In 1921 the family was living in Newton Abbot, Devon, and at some point, moved to Gloucester, where Ethel's address was Offas Dyke, Tidenham. She died in Worthing, (the home of her 87yr old mother), on 14th May 1931, aged 57yrs. Probate was granted to Henry Newcome Wright, solicitor, and Phyllis Mary Marshall, spinster, effects, £163 1s 8d. Value 2022 - £11,800.
