Life story

Life story

Ethel was born in South Stoneham, Hampshire, the daughter of Edward and Sarah. Her father was a railway clerk who eventually rose to become a railway carriers manager. The family lived in Yeovil for a while before moving to Portsmouth. In 1902, having met William Kaye Edden, Ethel gave birth to a son, Leslie Edden Fricker. The little boy died the following year. William was married to Ada and had eight children. In 1903 Ethel was named in an adultery case brought by Ada who named her husband as the father of Leslie. William denied paternity and the case was dismissed in 1904. William and Ada separated and William moved to Worthing living with Ethel at "Shelley Lodge" in Shelley Road. They had two children, John Kaye and Olive. In the 1911 census, Ethel is listed as a visitor and "single" although her surname is given as Edden. A marriage between William and Ethel has not been traced. William died on 17th July 1919. Ethel continued to live at Shelley Lodge until her death. Her daughter Olive married the son of Worthing's Town Clerk. Ethel died on 27th January 1949. Probate was granted on 22nd April to John Kaye Edden garage proprietor, Olive Allerton and Robert Wallington Hale Green solicitor. Effects £19789 18s 4d.
