Story

Ethel Maude Marshall was born in 1878 in Lancing, Sussex; she was the daughter of John Marshall, 36yrs, Market Gardener, and Eliza, 32yrs, nee Blunden. She had 2 older siblings, Edward, born 1867, Edith, born 1876, a brother, Percy, was born 1887.

On 10th April 1899, aged 21yrs, Ethel married Charles Edward Colbourne, 20yrs, he was a butcher in his family business in South Street, Lancing. They had a son in 1900, John Leslie, who was to be their only child, and who was tragically killed in a flying accident in 1918 after joining the RAF.

In 1911 Ethel and Charles had a butcher’s shop in Worthing, Ethel assisted her husband in his business, and in the 1930s Charles established a chain of 25 butchery shops in Sussex. At some point they moved to Hove where Ethel died, on 17th January 1939, aged 61yrs.

Killed whilst flying in Wiltshire 4th July 1918 aged 18 years and 8 months "We know not what a day will bring forth. Thy will be done" Also of his mother Ethel Maud Colbourne who passed away 17th Jan. 1939 aged 61 years.

The Worthing Herald – January 20th 1939.

The death ocurred at Brighton on Tuesday of Mrs Ethel Colbourne, wife of  Mr. Charles Colbourne, formerly of Lancing and Worthing.

Mr. Colbourne ran a butcher’s business at Tarring before the war, and is well-known both in Worthing and Lancing. His wife, formerly Miss Marshall, used to live at Malt House, Lancing.
