Life story

Esther Ada Harland was born in Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, in 1855. She was the daughter of Thomas Harland, 43yrs, General Dealer, and Fanny, 33yrs, nee Brown; she had 4 siblings, Thomas b.1850, Elizabeth b.1853, George b.1857, and Fanny b. 1860. In 1871, aged 16yrs, Esther was employed as a domestic servant.

On 23rd December 1874 Esther, 19yrs, married John William Tuckett, 20yrs, at St. Peter's, Leeds. They had 3 children, George Henry b.1875, Ada Mary b.1877, and Gladys Mona b.1892. John was a post office clerk when they married and rose to the rank of Postmaster in Gateshead, Burnley and finally Halifax.

John retired in 1913 after 42yrs with the post office and he and Esther moved to Worthing, living at Montrose, Heene, where John died on 18th April 1924, aged 70yrs. Esther remained in Worthing, moving to 34, Harrow Road, where she died on 17th February 1931, aged 76yrs. Probate was granted to Gladys Mona Tuckett, spinster, effects £1277 17s 4d.
