Life story

Ernest was born in Latchford, Cheshire, the son of Edward William and Elizabeth. He was baptised at Christ Church, Latchford on 12th April 1874. His father was a solicitor and Ernest followed him into the business. Ernest was a sporty young man excelling in cricket and hockey (see obituary). On 5th November 1909, he was initiated in the Freemason's Beaudesert Lodge in Leighton Buzzard. By then health problems had caused him to give up some sports as he suffered from an ulcer. Ernest died on 17th November 1912 at "Laburnam Cottage" Boughton Monchelsea in Kent. His parents had moved to Worthing by then and his father had passed away. His mother was living with his sister in Heene Road. Eventually all three would be buried at Heene. Probate was granted on 11th January 1913 to Mary Elise Hamerton spinster. Effects £2546 1s 10d.

Obituary

Runcorn Examiner 23rd November 1912

Death of Mr Ernest E Woods

One who was until a few years ago a prominent personality in athletic circles passed away at Boughton Monchelsea, Maidstone on Saturday, in the person of Mr Ernest Edward Woods, son of Mr Edward Woods solicitor, Horsemarket Street, Warrington. The deceased who was only 38 years of age had suffered from an internal complaint of long standing, but his death was unexpected. A fortnight ago he was in Warrington where there was a decided improvement in his health. Mr Woods was a great enthusiast at cricket and for many years a member of the Warrington Cricket and Bowling Club. He assisted the town club in many of their first team engagements and was chiefly noted for his aggressive work with the bat, whilst as an outfield his fine turn of speed was invaluable.

For one season Mr Woods acted as captain of the second eleven. A few years ago, he assisted with distinction the village club Moore and Daresbury. As a hockey player, Mr Woods was associated with the Stockton Heath club, and his defensive abilities marked him out as one of the most competent full-backs in the district. Mr Woods also achieved some notable victories on the cycling track a decade ago, but acting on medical advice, he was compelled to relinquish that pastime.
