Story

Ernest was born in Worthing, the son of Charles and Emma. He was baptised at Broadwater church on 12th August 1877. Charles Bacon was a bird dealer and fisherman. By 1891, the family were living in Stanley Road. Ernest trained as a plumber as did his brother James. On 23rd August 1901, Charles was found dead in his boat the “Shamrock”. He had rowed out from the beach to mend some of his nets. The inquest returned a verdict of “death by natural causes”, Charles having suffered a cerebral haemorrhage. Ernest married Annie Eliza Parsons at St Paul’s Church, Worthing on 15th February 1908. The couple set up home at “Durban” Highdown Avenue. A son, Albert Ernest was born in 1910. By 1924, the family were living above the shop at 22 The Broadway, in Tarring Road. Ernest died here after a long illness on 18th June 1929. Probate was granted on 29th January 1930 to Annie Eliza Bacon widow. Effects £2075 12s. Albert Ernest dissolved the business in 1935.
