Life story

Life story

Emma was born in Exton, Rutland, the daughter of William and Lucy. She was baptised in Exton on 1st May 1842. Her father was an agricultural labourer. As a young girl, Emma worked as a servant in a farmer's house. On 29th August 1869, she married George Lock in Rugby. George was a bricklayer's labourer and for a while the couple lived with George's father in Rugby. George changed his job to coachman and the couple moved to Worthing, living at 10 Ambrose Place. By 1879, they had moved to 24 Marine Parade which Emma ran as a lodging house. George died here on 20th July. Emma was his sole executrix and inherited £100. On 4th June 1881, Emma married James Woollard, a tailor at Broadwater church. Emma continued to run her lodging house business, now at Girton House, Marine Parade (between Queen's Road and Brunswick Road). She died in April 1893 and was buried at Heene on 24th April.
